The hotel located in Igman – a mountain plateau in central Bosnia and Herzegovina – was designed by Ahmed Džuvić for the XIV Olympic Winter Games. 
Respecting Igman’s forestry scenery, Ahmed Džuvić suceeded in constructing Hotel Igman through a skillful game of opposing roof and wall slopes, supplemented wooden cladding on the facade and secondary window plastics. The broken basis additionally contributed to this dance of polished surfaces. 
On the main facade references to the traditional architecture of the Dinaric Alps houses in Bosnia can be read most clearly: the division of ground floor, central mass and a steep sloping roof. Floor plans and facades show the dynamic and fragmented designed composition that with its silhouette additionally links to the mountain topography. Spatial and plastic play of oblique planes and elements of wooden structures creates an intimate and warm atmosphere of the interior.

In April of 1942, 4,000 Yugoslavian partisans watched some 40,000 Nazis and local fascist forces head directly towards their location in the city of Dera with the express goal of wiping them from the face of the planet.
During the spring of 1942 the Croatian army, Ustaša militia, and the German Wehrmacht surrounded the town of Banja Luka, and over the ensuing weeks, 80,000 civilians were wounded, 1,700 partisans killed, and 50,000 civilians were sent to concentration camps. In early July, a group of partisan forces was finally able to break the siege, but the human cost had already been paid.
To honor this tragic battle, the Kozara Memorial monument was erected in 1972. Designed by Dušan Džamonja, and built atop Mrakovica Mountain on a plateau surrounded by dense forest, the segmented tower stands 33 meters high. To honor the fallen dead, the names of 9921 of the Yugoslav partisans who gave their life for freedom during the World War II offensive are inscribed on a bronze memorial wall near the tower.

Kozara Monument

One of the many otherworldly monuments that dot the Bosnian landscape, the rocky passage of the Tjentište War Memorial is a stunning tribute to a total failure.
The two fractal walls of the memorial were erected in the 1970’s to remember Operation Fall Schwarz, otherwise known as the Battle of the Sutjeska. The military action took place during World War II and saw Axis forces attempt to rout a group of Yugoslavian forces and capture their leader. The complicated battle saw most of the Yugoslav forces able to escape, including their leader, foiling the Nazis’ plan, which was actually the second attempt at the same strategy. While the the Axis’ plan was a failure, it was not without tragedy. Over 7,000 people were killed, mostly just citizens who could not escape with the majority of the Yugoslavian military forces.
To remember both the Nazi failure and the tragic loss of life, the abstract war memorial was constructed. Like many of the memorials constructed in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 70’s the monument is an angular abstraction constructed from bleak grey cement. However despite the tragic roots and brutalist construction, the majestic strangeness of the Tjentište War Memorial cannot be denied.
